Passionate About Design in Waterloo
April 18th, 2012

I recently produced an Easter photo shoot which required some props. I sent a call out to some close friends and Clint Hogan Designs came back to me, suggesting I visit a new furniture and design store called PAD in Waterloo.
Off to Waterloo I went to see what this store was all about. I parked the car across the road and looked into the window displays. I immediately knew this place was ME. I couldn’t get inside fast enough to discover the world of rich and rare opulence.

PAD = Passionate About Design. That they most certainly are.
This place is a wonderland of gorgeous pieces, new and refurbished. Intricate patterns, fabrics, designs and collections which all team together beautifully to create the most special of spaces in your home. The photos really speak for themselves.
I’m totally in love with this place. Even just a walk around the store with no intention to purchase puts you into a special space in your mind and emotionally. It is so cleverly laid out, the natural light pouring in from the old warehouse roof, the burning candle scent wafting around the space and the attention to every detail is perfect for waking the senses.

The team at PAD are passionate about providing a complete service for their customers. They are more than happy to discuss the room you are decorating, taking into consideration the colour scheme, soft furnishings and existing furniture pieces to pull your look together. Bring some photos and take advantage of their Interior Decorators’ free advisory service.

If you are looking for a particular piece, or an elusive accessory, they are able to source both vintage and new pieces from their vast network of suppliers. From lamps and armchairs, to mirrors and tables, and everything in between – they will have you covered.
I suggest you get to the store as soon as possible, so you can see, feel and smell the experience for yourself.

Real Safe Candles Become A Talking Piece At Dinner
February 24th, 2012

One of my close friends Dr Nikki G hosted a beautiful dinner party for myself and some other great friends recently. She cooked an amazing meal, in her amazing apartment, over looking the amazing Sydney harbor. It really was the perfect night.
Now… There was one thing that really made all of the guests talk, including myself. It was Nikki’s candles. Like inquisitive children, we played with the trio of candles, which seamlessly changed colours with the remote.

What? Changing colours and a remote?! Well… YES! They are called Real Safe Candles and they are available to purchase in a huge range of colours, styles and scents.
So what exactly are they?
Created by a new mum Rachael, after much research, she created Australia’s first brand of flameless wax candles.

Made from real wax, the flameless candles feature state of the art technology which allow has an LED inside, with a choice of steady or flickering light. Depending on which candle you buy, you can change the LED colour with a choice of 12 beautiful colours. The candles also have a 4 or 8 hour timer.

Sold in over 300 stores and used in many bars, cruise ships, restaurants, hotels and day spas across the globe, there is no doubt you have come across them before.
Now you really need to visit the site yourself and find the one you love most! They are great looking, made from high quality materials and are very well priced – considering they will last much longer then any other candle you will ever own!

They are also one of the best gift ideas I have ever come across – think how much mum would love these for Mothers Day!

The Stylish Urban Composter
February 22nd, 2012

Cleverly designed for the kitchen, the new Urban Composter is an airtight bucket which allows you to throw all types of food scraps including coffee grounds, dead flowers, meat, fish, dairy products, egg shells, fruits, vegetables and more.
It looks good, so won’t ruin the look of a modern kitchen and there are 4 colour lids to choose from, and best thing about it? It’s designed and made in Australia!
Below is a quick run down on how the Urban Composter works (taken from the website):
Throw

Food scraps cut into small pieces are placed into the Urban Composter. All types of food scraps can be composted including: Meat, Fish, Vegies, Fruit, Dairy, Coffee, Wilted Flowers (no bones or excessive liquids).
Spray

A Compost Accelerator is sprayed on, assisting in the break down and fermentation of the scraps. The composting process is anaerobic which means that the food scraps don’t rot or smell while breaking down.
Drain

As the scraps ferment, liquids are released. This juice saturated in good bacteria and nutrients can be drained off every few days, as an excellent fertiliser for plants, or can be flushed down drains as it promotes septic systems.
Mix with soil

The scraps will break down in approx 4-8 weeks. Once the bucket is full, and all the liquid drained, the pulp can be added to soil. It can be: buried in the garden, in a pot or planter of soil, added to outdoor compost or to worm farms.

Miss Ćesko Coffee & Side Tables by Hardwick & Ćesko
July 28th, 2011

Hardwick & Ćesko present the launch of their first furniture pieces in April this year, and although a little late, it’s still definately worth the mention because they are so damn adorable! Having just visited the doily factory in Venice myself (no I’m not a 70 year old woman!), the Miss Ćesko coffee and side tables and a perfect contemporary addition to your sleek living space.
These truly distinctive tables are manufactured using the highest quality of materials and are designed and made in Australia by David Hardwick, Head Designer at Hardwick & Ćesko. Australian made – we love that!
The inspiration for these tables stemmed from a fascination David Hardwick had with the intricate detail of crochet and more specifically doilies. If you ask me, I think design reflects the lost tradition within a contemporary context.
“In the design of the tables, it became very important that not only the table-top could replicate the doily, but how the base and stem of the table could accentuate the form of the top without competing with it for attention. Hence the stem of the table is divided in the middle, tapering equally to the top and the bottom, as if the process of creation started at this central point. The strong, yet simple, circular form of the base providing the stability & support for the contrastingly intricate detail and soft lines of the patterned top” David mentioned in response to an email I sent saying how much I loved the product.
The Coffee table tops are made from either American black walnut from an FSC certified timber source or from white laminate on FSC certified eco plywood. The bases are made out of high quality Australian steel with a white powder-coated finish.

Vistosi’s Lichena Collection Plays With Light and Silhouette
June 28th, 2011

A few years ago, I went to Switzerland in the middle of summer. I visited Mt Titlis, and at the top of the mountain it was snowing and there was an ice cave. Plunging from the roof were sparkling ice stalictites, refracting light from every angle. It was just amazing!
So it was obvious that when I saw the new Lichena lighting collection from Murano glass manufacturer Vistosi, I would fall in love.
Made from crystal glass, the dramatic yet delicate lights can add a really glamorous touch to a home that is appropriately decorated.
Designed by Mauro Olivieri, the collection is edgy and contemporary, it was unveiled for the first time in Milan at Euroluce during Salone del Mobile, the Lichena collection embodies pure form with texture and transparency, enabling an intricate interplay between light and silhouettes through the crystal.
The collection of Lichena lamps is available in multiple fittings including as a floor, pendant, and suspension lamp.

Mic Ritter’s Chest Of Drawers – Unique and Personally Handcrafted
June 9th, 2011

Mic Ritter, ‘Young Designer of the Year’ at the ‘Powerhouse Museum’s Young Blood Designer Exhibition (2010)’, is now an award winning furniture designer and maker. Mic’s latest designs continue to showcase his talents.
I have a love for old trunks, which I have featured the ones in my home on here before, but nothing really beats this amazing creation by Mic. It’s by far my favourite piece of all.
It’s called Chest of Drawers, personally handcrafted with a combination of custom built trunks made from scratch (the top three in image) and re-fashioned vintage trunks (the bottom two). The top three trunks have been covered in fabric and re-used leather (ripped out from an old couch) to replicate the look of old luggage.
All five trunks have a timber frame constructed of Tasmanian oak. The construction of the drawers for the false fronts has been created using traditional hand cut dovetail joints with Australian cedar. Kourie pine was used for the rest of the drawer assembly. The top right case has a compartment set out as a jewellery box crafted from Australian Cedar. Talk about an all Australian product, constructed by an Australian for Australians. Strong, sturdy and a real stand-out piece in any home. It would be perfect in mine!
Based on the Central Coast, Mic says “The idea for the piece was conceived when I was working with antiques. At the time I was repairing an old chest of drawers and noticed that one of the drawers had the same dimensions as a vintage suite case. The concept of using different styles of cases to create a chest of drawers followed on from there. The five individual cases have been fixed together and sit on a timber base styled with cabriole legs and finished with a french polish.”
What a clever guy!
For further information, to view Mic’s other work and for interviews please email him on: mail@micritter.com OR you can see it in person at Original Finish, in Newtown – www.originalfinish.com.au
